Last year was a good year for us wine geeks as we got to see the documentary film SOMM – a movie about four guys chasing after the prestigious Master Sommelier designation. Released last year, the film was widely reviewed and saw great success outside wine circles. But before that, it’s been quite some time before a wine movie with such a far reach has been released.

We all remember the movies “Sideways” (2004) and “Bottle Shock” (2008). Both these films not only were able to gross some money in return but were able to cast actors that resonated with a lot of moviegoers (Bill Pullman, Allan Rickman, Chris Pine, Paul Giamatti, etc.). Other notable wine movies such as “Mondovino”, “Blood Into Wine”, and “Red Obsession” were far too niche and not as palatable for the larger wine consumer. Have you even heard of those three films?

As the Baby Boomers and Millennials continue to drive more growth in the wine industry, you have to think another wine movie that will be highly regarded is upon us. Hollywood tends to go for movies that appeal to multiple demographics and have the potential to go international. So why not a blockbuster wine movie? It’s time!
